Introducing Telemetry in OpenBAS 1.14
Introduction
In OpenBAS 1.14, Breach and Attack Simulation platform, we introduced a telemetry manager. This feature represents a crucial step in our ongoing efforts to enhance performance, optimize functionality, and refine the user experience. By gathering statistical data, we can better understand platform usage, allowing us to make data-driven decisions that benefit our entire community. The data are anonymized and statistical. User personal information and confidential data are not collected.
Why telemetry ?
Understanding how our platform is used is essential for making meaningful improvements. The telemetry manager provides us with anonymized statistical insights, helping us identify which features are widely adopted and which may need refinement.
With this data, we can optimize platform performance based on actual usage patterns, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently. It also enables us to focus on developing features that truly matter to our users while identifying and resolving potential inefficiencies or underutilized functionalities.
By leveraging telemetry, we can continuously enhance OpenBAS, ensuring it remains a powerful and user-friendly tool.
What We Collect ?
Rest assured, we do not collect any personal data. Our telemetry system strictly focuses on statistical insights. The following metrics are gathered in OpenBAS 1.14:
- the current platform version
- the platform unique identifier
- the platform creation date
- the total number of users
- the Enterprise Edition status (if EE is activated or not)
- The number of agent deployed
- The number of simulations, scenarios, and atomic tests created
- The number of simulations or injects executed
Technical Details
- Data is exported every 6 hours using the OTLP protocol.
- The metrics are sent to the
telemetry.filigran.io
hostname over HTTPS. If OpenBAS is unable to connect to the hostname at the telemetry manager start, the export is deactivated. - Exported data is written in the OpenTelemetry JSON format.
Our telemetry manager is always enabled to provide us with continuous feedback. This allows us to keep enhancing the platform based on real-time data.
Conclusion
Collecting telemetry data, in respect of users privacy and data confidentiality, is game changer for Filigran. It enables to understand better how the platform is used, in order to propose solutions and features adapted to our users behaviors, while improving the OpenBAS experience and functionalities in the best way for our community.
